Dom Cooper
Sculptor
About:
Dom lives in Norwich, UK, with his very patient partner and two lovely daughters. He studied International Relations at the University of Keele and then taught English in Japan, before spending 28 years teaching in Primary schools in and around Norwich.
Now he devotes more of his time to making sculptures.
His forms tend to be biomorphic in nature and are not planned out as such, but allowed to emerge naturally from the material.
Dom has exhibited his sculptures throughout East Anglia and some of his work is in private collections throughout the land.
Artist’s Statement:
My inspiration comes from the shapes and forms that are hidden all around us. The shadows cast by leaves on a wall, a stain on the pavement, patterns lurking in brickwork.
I am compelled to turn these into solid forms in plaster, wood or stone. Of course, the material will then play its own part in the process – the resistance in the stone, for example, or the grain of the wood, even the variations in the plaster, will direct the chisel in their own way.
The process is a collaboration between myself and the material and you never quite know what you will get, but in the end it will suggest some meaning and a name may come to mind. It is a thrill to create a new entity, never before beheld, hinting at another, fantastical world.
